How to Set Hair

In this video, Mahalo hairstylist Jamie Pierce shows you how to set your hair.

What You'll Need
---------------------------------------------------------------------

* Curling iron
* Small sectioning comb
* Double-prong hair clips
* Lightweight to medium hairspray

Before You Start
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Think about what your end goal for you hair is and prep and part accordingly. Don't fight the natural part of your hair.

Step 1: Set Fringe
---------------------------------------------------------------------

If you have bangs, section them out with your comb in a horseshoe shape around your face. Clip the rest of your hair out of the way.
Piece out your bangs layer by layer. Spray them with hairspray in the opposite direction they will be laying to create volume. Curl each layer with the curling iron and clip it in place.

Step 2: Curling Technique

When you're curling your hair, start at the base and rotate toward the bottom. This is how your curls will get the most memory and bounce.
Make sure that as you spray the curls, you don't use too much hairspray because you'll need to be able to work through it at the end.

Don't get frustrated. This takes practice.

Step 3: Work Your Way Around
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Continue to curl and pin each section of your hair. When it comes to the section around your face, decide whether you want the curl to open up around the face or frame your face. To open up the curls, rotate the curling over the top of the hair. If you want it to frame your face, rotate the curling underneath.

Step 4: Curl the Back
---------------------------------------------------------------------

Starting at the top of the back of your head, spray, curl and clip each section of your hair. Even if you have thick hair, spray and curl all the sections.
You want the set curls to have a brick-lay pattern, meaning the pinned curls look like a brick wall where the bricks interlock. This will prevent obvious seams in your curls when you are all done.

Step 5: Let Sit Before Taking Down

Let your hair cool down before removing the clips and running your fingers through your hair to loosen the curls. You're now ready to wear as is or continue on to another hairstyle.
