Today, in our sports encyclopedia series we will talk about how to play Janus Chess.
The game begins by laying out a 10 by 8 board on a flat surface.
The setup is the same as regular chess but with a few modifications.
There are two additional pawns and two Januses for each player.
Each Janus is positioned between a rook and a knight.
The placement of the King and Queen is reversed in this game.
The Janus can move in the same way as a bishop or a knight.
It can move diagonally in a straight line like a bishop or it can move in an L shape, jumping over pieces like a knight.
However, the players are not allowed to execute the moves of the knight and the bishop with the Janus in one single move, it is either the bishop’s move or the knight’s.
Moreover, if the Janus is being moved diagonally like a bishop then it is not allowed to jump over pieces.
In this game, the players can castle like it is done in regular chess by placing the king next to either one of the two rooks and then placing that rook adjacent to the king on the other side.
The first player who manages to checkmate their opponent’s king wins.
