STATEMENT:

The area surrounding the small villages of Ganzedijk and Hongerige Wolf in the Groningen region is a cultivated landscape. A firm and wide scenery that used to be part of the sea and was later reclaimed by mankind for the mining of peat, clay and natural gas. This land has proven to function as a resilient and fertile environment with a great potential for the production of combustibles, bricks and greens. From the fields and the dikes to the local tales in the hamlets about a murderous writer and council fights, the landscape is there to provide the background but even more, to define their raison d'être.

Workers came to Groningen to find opportunities, visitors to experience its uncompromising largeness. Perhaps it is the scale of the landscape and the vast community that stimulated entrepreneurs to exploit new resources and rural opportunities far away from the bureaucracy, regulations and complexity of the Randstad. The history of Ganzedijk is rational and cyclical: when the (mussel)fishing industry decreased the agricultural era started; when the clay was exhausted they transitioned to natural gas. The regional problems of present day such as aging and the damage caused by earthquakes form the indicators for the next mutation as a production landscape.

The authenticity of the Groninger landscape as a productive environment is emphasized by its wideness, low density of population and location along the open sea. These topographic features qualify as a favourable location for the production of energy by wind power. REWIND marks and triggers the investigation of renewed possibilities for the landscape by creating a sustainable landmark. It celebrates the landscape as a sculptural observatory, provides electricity to the local residents and reminds visitors of the robust character of the region.

REWIND is modelled from the primal windmill with a vertical drive-shaft invented by the Persians that advantages reliability and simplicity due to a continuous, low-speed movement and independence from the wind direction. The design is a manipulation of the modern wind turbine with a capacity of 2-3 households; 2% of the Ganzedijk population. The result is a spatial sculpture that rises up from the fields, provides a pavilion to experience the landscape and symbolizes the launch of a new era in Groningen.
