Flash Drive Only Shows 200MB Space Available – Fix 128GB USB Flash Drives Seen as 200MB

I have a 128GB flash drive that I’m going to use for music files in my car. But for some reason when I look at the properties of this drive it only shows up as having 200MB of space available. That’s a fraction of what it should hold. If you’re experiencing the same low capacity on your flash drive or SD card, I have a solution that will help reclaim the majority of the space on the memory card or stick.

When I go to Disk Management I can see that this flash drive currently in the Disk 4 slot has two partitions and one of them is 200MB which is the only partition that seems usable at this time. And if I right click on either partition to try to format the drive all the options are greyed out. So in this video I’ll show you an alternative way to clear this drive of the partitions and make it a single 128GB drive.

Please backup any data you have on your drive before you continue because what I’m going to show you in this video will completely erase the drive.

In the Windows search bar, type in diskpart which is all one word and then click on the top result. In this command window type in list disk and hit Enter. A list of connected drives will show up. I know disk 4 is the one I’m working with so type in Select Disk 4 and hit Enter. It’ll tell you that Disk 4 is the current drive we’re working with. This next part is going to erase your drive so once again I remind you to backup your data before continuing. When you’re ready type Clean and hit Enter. In a couple of seconds you’ll there will be confirmation that the disk was cleaned.

At this point the drive isn’t ready for use yet but we’ve cleared the partitions on it. The final step is to format the drive. Now right click on the Windows Start button again and then click on Disk Management. Scroll down to Disk 4 to see it’s status. It’s now showing as one partition that’s unallocated. Right click on the unallocated space and click on New Simple Volume. Click Next through the next two windows.

This next part is optional but you don’t have to assign a drive letter but I’m going to change the letter to something else because I know I already have an F: drive mounted on the computer used in this video. Then click Next. You will also be able to choose the type of formatting. For Windows NTFS is probably what you want but for what I’m using this drive for I’ll choose exFAT.

Changing the name of the drive is optional but I’m going to call mine Music. Now click on Next and finally once you click Finish the drive will be formatted and erased. At this point I have the full capacity of the thumb drive available for storage now. This whole process takes longer to explain than to actually do. But now I have a 128GB flash drive I can use in my car for hours and hours of music!
