Ramadan for kids
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is regarded as one of the holiest months for Muslims around the world. It is most well-known for being the month of fasting, which is one of the Five Pillars of Islam—the core beliefs and practices that all Muslims are expected to follow.
During Ramadan, adult Muslims are required to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking, and marital relations from dawn (Fajr) until sunset (Maghrib). The fast is a means of self-purification, self-reflection, and spiritual growth. It's a time for Muslims to practice self-discipline, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate, promoting acts of generosity and compulsory charity (Zakat).
The significance of Ramadan also lies in its being the month in which the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the angel Jibril (Gabriel). This event is commemorated on Laylat al-Qadr, or the Night of Decree, which is believed to occur on one of the last ten nights of Ramadan, with the 27th night being the most widely observed. Laylat al-Qadr is considered the holiest night of the year, when the rewards for prayer and devotion are believed to be multiplied.
Muslims engage in extra prayers and recitations of the Quran throughout the month, particularly at night. Taraweeh prayers, which are special nightly prayers during which long portions of the Quran are recited, are performed in congregations at mosques.
Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, is not only about abstaining from food and drink from dawn until sunset but also about learning and practicing good ethics and behaviors. Here are some key ethics of Ramadan that can be taught to kids in a simple and engaging way:
1. Patience and Self-control
Teaching Point: Explain that Ramadan teaches us to be patient and control our desires, not just for food and drink but also in our actions and words.
Activity Idea: Create a "Patience Jar" where kids can add a marble or a piece of paper every time they practice patience, like waiting their turn or controlling anger.
2. Empathy and Compassion
Teaching Point: Fasting helps us understand how people who are hungry feel, encouraging us to help those who are less fortunate.
Activity Idea: Involve kids in preparing food packages for the needy or writing kind letters to cheer someone up.
3. Gratitude
Teaching Point: Ramadan teaches us to be thankful for all the blessings we have, including food, family, and friends.
Activity Idea: Create a gratitude tree, where each leaf has something the child is thankful for written on it.
4. Generosity and Charity
Teaching Point: Giving to others, not just money but time and kind words, is a big part of Ramadan.
Activity Idea: Encourage kids to donate a portion of their savings or their toys to those in need.
5. Kindness and Good Manners
Teaching Point: Ramadan is a time to practice being kind to everyone around us and to use good manners.
Activity Idea: Have a kindness challenge, where each day, kids must do a random act of kindness and share it with the family.
6. Discipline and Time Management
Teaching Point: Observing the fast and the additional prayers teaches discipline and how to manage our time effectively.
Activity Idea: Help kids create a Ramadan schedule that includes time for prayers, reading Quran, helping around the house, and doing homework.
7. Reflection and Prayer
Teaching Point: Ramadan is a time for prayer and reflection, getting closer to Allah, and asking for forgiveness.
Activity Idea: Encourage kids to keep a Ramadan journal where they can write their thoughts, prayers, and what they learn about themselves during the month.
8. Community and Togetherness
Teaching Point: Sharing iftar (the meal to break the fast) with family and friends shows the importance of community in Islam.
Activity Idea: Host a small iftar where kids can invite their friends (Muslim and non-Muslim) to experience and learn about Ramadan.
