Previously, Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Odisha were recognized as classical languages. In 2004, Tamil was given this status. In 2014, Odia language was given classical status. In an event, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnab said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has always focused on Indian languages. Today 5 languages are recognized as classical languages Marathi, Pali, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali.
