Maximilien Robespierre (1758–1794) was a leading figure of the French Revolution and one of its most uncompromising ideologues. Born in Arras, France, he rose from a provincial lawyer to a dominant voice in the National Convention and the Jacobin Club.

Robespierre was a fervent believer in republican virtue, popular sovereignty, and the ideas of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He viewed the Revolution not merely as political change, but as a moral crusade, convinced that France could only be saved through absolute commitment to revolutionary principles. This conviction hardened into fanaticism during the Reign of Terror (1793–1794), when Robespierre argued that “virtue without terror is powerless, and terror without virtue is fatal.”

Under his influence, the Committee of Public Safety oversaw mass arrests and executions of perceived enemies of the Revolution, including former allies. Robespierre’s refusal to tolerate dissent, combined with his belief in his own moral infallibility, led to widespread fear and political paralysis. Ultimately, his extremism isolated him; he was arrested and executed by guillotine on 28 July 1794, marking the end of the Terror and serving as a stark example of how revolutionary idealism can descend into authoritarian violence.
