In January 1942, while Nazi officials in Berlin turn genocide into “administrative logistics,” Budapest still feels like a fragile island of safety—until German occupation and Adolf Eichmann’s deportation machine arrives. Families like Emil and Margit Hermann and their daughter Vera, and Budapest medical student Alice Brewer, are trapped inside a tightening net of yellow-star decrees, confiscations, makeshift ghettos, and cattle-car transports.

Into that storm steps Raoul Wallenberg, a young Swedish diplomat backed by the U.S. War Refugee Board. Arriving on July 9, 1944, he refuses to “observe.” He designs the Schutzpass—an official-looking bluff meant to overawe SS and Hungarian officials—and builds a rescue apparatus: Section C inside the Swedish legation, hundreds of Jewish staff granted immunity, and Swedish-flag “safe houses” that help form an international ghetto.

When Arrow Cross terror and death marches drive victims toward the border at Hegyeshalom, Wallenberg abandons bureaucracy for brinkmanship—pulling people from columns, climbing onto cattle cars, and thrusting protective papers into shaking hands while rifles aim at his chest.

Then comes the twist: liberation brings a different peril. Wallenberg sets out with his driver Vilmos Langfelder to meet Soviet commanders—warning a friend he may be going “as a guest or a prisoner”—and vanishes into NKVD custody, Moscow, and the iron doors of Lubyanka. Decades later, relatives Guy von Dardel and Nina Lagergren pursue fragments, sightings, and archives while official explanations never fully close the case.
