Lecture for Building & Construction Technology at UMass Amherst, given by Lisa Carey Moore, Senior Sustainability Manager for Integrated Eco Strategy.

Products used on a project can have significant and enduring health effects—not only on your building's occupants, but on the community where the products are made and on the workers who manufacture and install them.  Products may also have significant impact on the planet, through extraction, manufacturing, and eventual disposal. So where does one start when trying to incorporate healthier materials into a project? 

The presentation will share case studies that highlight the challenges to, and opportunities for, bringing healthier materials into your next building projects, or your daily practice as a designer of any kind. Stories will highlight lessons learned from the speaker’s involvement with a range of Living Building Challenge project types, including educational centers, a large laboratory building, and renovation of existing buildings.

Speaker: 
Lisa Carey Moore, LEED AP BD+C, is Senior Sustainability Manager for Integrated Eco Strategy (IES), a healthy materials consulting and software firm (materiallybetter.com) in North Adams.  She works with owners, manufacturers, specifiers and contractors to ensure materials compliance for projects pursuing Living Building Challenge (LBC) Certification, primarily in campus settings. Recent work includes Hampshire College’s R.W. Kern Center and Hitchcock Center for the Environment, both in Amherst, Nuthatch Hollow Environmental Center at Binghamton University, NY, a large laboratory project in Allston, MA, and IES’s first LBC project, the Williams College Environmental Center, in Williamstown. As an environmental advocate Carey Moore successfully lobbied state and federal officials, securing vital funding for municipalities requiring sewer and storm water system upgrades to meet Clean Water Act mandates, as well as participating in development of a habitat restoration plan for Long Island Sound. She continues to volunteer her efforts in the environmental policy realm working with a coalition of groups to get a number of toxic flame retardants out of consumer products. Carey Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in Honors Political Science and Environmental Studies from McGill University.
