Today we're checking out the ENGL Fireball 60 and I tell you, this thing delivers sonic bliss for any high gain tone chaser. I received this unit used through a trade with one of my buddy's and noticed it was unbearably fizzy with lots of bassy hum. So I did a little tinkering and saw that the original owner retubed it with Mesa branded preamps. I did a little research and went over sound clips and noticed the Mesa branded 12AX7 tubes run extremely hot. So I decided to remove them and install tung-sols for the gain stage. A Sovtek in the V1 and a Eletro Harmonix in the phase inverter position. Turned the Fireball back on and it made a night & day difference. The overall volume increased, excessive fizz went away, and the oscillating hum went away. I've been told that JJ gold pins do a great job on taming the highend. Can't wait for those to come in.
