My name is Devin, and my friend Paul assisted with the editing of my Italian fly fishing adventure. Italy is best known for amazing food, cars, fashion, history and architecture, but you can also find interesting fly fishing off the beaten tourist path. My good friend Steve and I took a guided trip to the stream Dolo (Torrente Dolo) near the small mountain town of Civago, between Tuscany and Emilia-Romano.

This part of the Torrente Dolo is a regulated fishing reserve with two strains of brown trout – the Mediterranean and Atlantic strains (http://torrentedolo.it/). We were guided by the expert fly-fisher, Marco Delitalia Castri, whom you can follow on Facebook (  / marco.delitalacalistri  . We exclusively used Marco’s dry flies. The Torrente Dolo is a beautiful stream, but it can be hard to navigate the uneven footing and slippery rocks. Lots of small pools hold small trout, and a few bigger pools hold bigger fish.

We stayed three nights at the Hotel Isabel. Prices for guide, food and lodging are extremely reasonable and, as with most of Italy, the food was great. The fishing was strictly catch and release, and Osvaldo, the curator of the fishing reserve, made sure that our hooks were barbless and that we released the fish quickly and in the right pool.
