Black walnut, Juglans nigra, and black locust, Robinia pseudoacacia, are both pioneer tree species that are often found growing together on disturbed sites in the eastern United States. In the winter, when the trees are without leaves, they may be confused since the younger bark of both species look quite similar. This video covers the identification of these two species at all times of the year, with an emphasis on how to tell them apart in the fall and winter months.
