Disco Doesn't Suck (Part 1)

Disco Music has sadly been reduced to a trivial novelty of 1970s popular culture. It is seen more as a sitcom punchline than as a serious musical genre. This is a major injustice for a couple of reasons. The most obvious one is the influence Disco has had on other styles of music from Pop and Hip-Hop to EDM and Jazz. The perhaps lesser obvious reason for Disco's historical significance is the impact it had on the Black, Latino and LGBT communities. The Funk, Soul and Afro-Beat that formed the foundation for Disco were the soundtrack for the massive cultural revolution that occurred during the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s. Discotheques themselves often became the community hub being one of the few places the disenfranchised could feel free to express who they were. The freedom and escape that disco offered continued to grow in appeal as the economic pressures of the 1970s increased and as the women's liberation movement gained momentum. All that said, one of the beautiful things about Disco is that is doesn't take itself too serious. There are no Dylan-esque lyrics or complex musical structures. Most songs just simply feel good to the body and soul. The solid heartbeat of the rhythms and the laissez faire attitude of the lyrics will almost always elevate the vibe and increase the energy of a room whenever a Disco song comes on.
