It’s just after 11:30pm near the small township of Plevna, Kansas on Sunday May 18th, 2025.

Warm muggy temperatures and strong southeasterly winds are present throughout the entirety of south-central Kansas.

Throughout the small township of Plevna, most families are fast asleep in preparation for the new work week starting the next day.

However, while most people were fast asleep, a rare, moderate risk for significant tornadoes threatened a large portion of the Plains, with south-central Kansas in the direct center.

Earlier in the day, numerous tornadoes had formed across parts of northwestern Kansas and Western Oklahoma.

While Southern Kansas had been the initial focal point for the main severe weather activity in the forecasts issued early in the day, lingering cloud cover had stunted the tornado threat for the area through the daytime hours.

However, as the sun began to set, an isolated supercell began to explode in Northern Oklahoma in the untapped, and extremely volatile environment.

Within mere hours, the storm began producing numerous extremely large and strong tornadoes throughout south Central Kansas.

As the supercell began to near Plevna, phones, TVs, weather radios, and tornado sirens began to blare, waking many of the 85 residents in the small township.

Pastor David Green and his wife Larissa were among the numerous Plevna residents waken up by the warning.

With just minutes until the tornado was to stike their residence, the Greens rushed to their basement and hid under the stairs for cover.

In an instant, the over mile-wide significant wedge tornado struck the Green’s residence with winds of up to 155mph.

In the end their home was severely damaged from the massive and significant tornado, but they were both fortunately still alive.

In just under 3 hours the tornadic supercell produced 8 tornadoes, with 5 of them being rated EF3, across various parts of south-central Kansas, leaving a trail of almost complete destruction in their wake.
