The Meaning of the Peacock Symbol in Christianity

Описание к видео The Meaning of the Peacock Symbol in Christianity

You might be surprised to see artwork with images of a peacock in Catholic Churches. What is the meaning of this Christian symbol?

Peacocks have large, ornate, and beautiful tail feathers. Early Christians used the peacock as symbol in their early artwork to refer to the resurrection and eternal life. The bird was often depicted near the Tree of Life or drinking the waters of eternal life. It is often found on or near tombs of the early Christians.

Here is the meaning of the peacock symbol in Christianity:

1) Some of the ancient Greeks believed that the body of a peacock was so tough that it did not decompose after death. Thus, it became a symbol for immortality that Christians used as a metaphor for the resurrection.

2) A peacock's beautiful plumage falls and is replaced each year. This also became a symbol for the resurrection. Just as our bodies die and rise again, so do the peacock's feathers fall and regrow again.

3) Finally, the shiny circles on the tail feathers of a peacock reminded Christians of the all-seeing eyes of God.
