See these? These are the the control surfaces of aircraft. Parts like the flaps and rudder which control the plane's movement in flight by changing its pitch, roll, and yaw. Now this is DARPA's X-65 experimental aircraft and it doesn't have any of these surfaces. No flaps, rudders or any other similar surfaces. The X-65 instead uses active flow control or basically pressured jets of air from nozzles to control its pitch, roll, and yaw. This makes the aircraft lighter and cheaper and also imrpves its performance and manevourability. The X-65's first flight will happen sometime next year and DARPA's betting on it to kickstart the use of this tchnology for both military and commercial aircraft. Pretty cool isn't it?
