The life of Mary Baker Eddy began as a constant battle against pain and suffering. She was born into a modest farmhouse in New Hampshire and was plagued by frail health from childhood. The first forty years of her existence resembled a series of unrelenting tragedies. She was widowed early and left without any financial support. Her second marriage ended in a painful divorce due to her husband's infidelity. To make matters worse her beloved son was taken away from her and given to another family to raise. Mary appeared to be a broken woman. She sought healing in homeopathy and various cures of the time but found no lasting relief.
The fateful turning point occurred on a cold winter evening in 1866. Mary slipped on the ice and suffered a severe spinal injury. Doctors feared for her life and told her friends to prepare for the worst. She lay in bed waiting for death and asked for her Bible. She opened the book to an account of one of Jesus' healings. In that moment she felt a sudden surge of strength and realized the spiritual nature of health. Mary rose from her bed completely healed. This miracle shocked her doctors and changed her destiny forever.
She spent the next few years in seclusion and deep study of the Scriptures. The result of this work was the book Science and Health which challenged the entire medical and religious establishment of the 19th century. Mary declared that sickness was an illusion born of fear and that healing was possible through understanding the divine mind. In 1879 she founded the Church of Christ, Scientist. This was unheard of in an era when women had almost no voice in religious matters. Her ideas provoked furious debates and criticism from clergymen and physicians alike.
The movement grew rapidly despite lawsuits and public attacks. By the end of her life Mary Baker Eddy had become one of the most influential and wealthy women in America. She founded the world-famous newspaper The Christian Science Monitor at the age of 87. This frail woman succeeded in building a global religious empire. She died in 1910 and left behind a legacy that continues to spark heated discussion around the world today.
