Born in Sydney, Australia in 1973, Robert Edward Machado seemed an unlikely candidate to revolutionize surfing. At age four, his family relocated to Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California – the place that would shape his identity. Ironically, the man known for his liquid grace on waves was initially terrified of the ocean.
