A tragic building collapse in Bhiwandi has claimed the lives of seven people. The incident occurred on April 29, 2023, at 1:45 PM, in the Vardhaman Compound of Valpada, Bhiwandi. The initial reports confirmed three deaths, but the final death toll rose to seven after extensive rescue operations. This disaster has once again brought to the forefront the critical issue of unauthorized and dilapidated buildings, which pose a grave risk during the monsoon.

Immediately after the collapse, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF) were dispatched to the scene. The Bhiwandi Fire Brigade and local police also assisted in the rescue efforts. Earth-moving machinery was used to clear the heavy debris. After hours of painstaking work, a total of 14 people were safely pulled out of the rubble, including 38-year-old Sunil Pisal, who was rescued after being trapped for over 20 hours.

The victims included Navnath Sawant (43), Lalita Ravi Mahto (26), and a 5-year-old girl, Sona Mukesh Kori. Lalita Mahto's two young sons, Prem (7) and Prince (5), were also injured but were safely rescued. They are currently receiving treatment at the Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital in Bhiwandi.

Initial investigations revealed the building was approximately 10 years old. Officials suspect that the recent installation of a mobile tower on the roof might have been a contributing factor to the collapse. The building housed godowns on the ground and first floors and residential units on the second floor.

In response to the tragedy, the police have detained the builder and owner, Indrapal Patil. A case has been registered against him at the Narpoli Police Station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, visited the site and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased and free medical treatment for the injured. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for authorities to take strict action against dangerous structures to prevent future disasters.
