Velliangiri Hills is a sacred and adventurous trekking destination located in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. It is often called "South Kailash" (தெற்கு கைலாயம்) because it is believed to be Lord Shiva’s divine abode. The trek covers seven hills, each with its own unique terrain and difficulty level. The total trek distance is approximately 15-18 km (both ways) and takes 6-10 hours to complete. The journey starts from Poondi Temple, which serves as the base camp for the trek. The first hill is relatively easy and passes through dense forests with a mild incline. The second and third hills are steeper and have rocky paths, testing endurance levels. The fourth and fifth hills are the toughest, with continuous steep climbs. The sixth hill is a breathtaking stretch with high-altitude wind and mist. The seventh hill leads to the sacred Velliangiri Shiva Temple, located at the peak. Devotees believe that Lord Shiva himself meditated here, making this place highly spiritual. The trek is open mainly from February to May, as the monsoon and winter seasons make it dangerous. Many trekkers experience extreme weather variations, from humid forests to cold, misty hilltops. Along the way, you’ll find natural water sources and small streams for refreshment. Carrying enough water and energy snacks is essential, as no shops exist after the base camp. The sunrise and sunset views from the peak are breathtaking, making the trek worth the effort. The flora and fauna of the Velliangiri Hills are diverse, including rare medicinal plants and wildlife. Plastic items are strictly prohibited to maintain the sanctity and cleanliness of the hills. Devotees usually perform the trek barefoot as a form of spiritual devotion. The temple at the peak does not have a built structure but contains a Shiva Lingam, worshipped with great devotion. Women between 10 to 50 years of age are traditionally restricted from trekking due to religious beliefs. During Maha Shivaratri, thousands of devotees climb the hills to seek Shiva’s blessings. A unique belief is that the energy of Mount Kailash is present at Velliangiri, making it sacred. The trek is recommended only for physically fit individuals due to its challenging nature. Many pilgrims follow a strict vegetarian diet and fasting before starting the trek. The nearest city is Coimbatore, around 40 km away, with good transport facilities. The trek is best done early in the morning to avoid exhaustion and return before dark. There are no accommodations at the peak, so trekkers must return the same day. Velliangiri Hills is a perfect combination of adventure, spirituality, and breathtaking nature, attracting both trekkers and devotees alike.
