What begins as a trip to honor a friend's memory descends into a primal nightmare. In this video, we dive into the chilling atmosphere of the 2017 British horror film "The Ritual" (also known as "Black Forest Spirit"), directed by David Bruckner.

Four old university friends set out to hike across the remote Scandinavian wilderness as a tribute to their deceased companion. When they take a shortcut through an ancient, mist-shrouded black forest, they stumble into territory ruled by an old and evil force straight out of Norse myth. The forest itself becomes a hunting ground, and they are the prey.

The film masterfully blends a survival horror plot with mythological terror. Every step deeper into the woods raises the tension, not just from the unseen creature stalking them, but from the personal demons haunting the group, particularly Luke, who is wrestling with survivor's guilt. The discovery of ritualistic symbols and gut-wrenching nightmares in a secluded cabin confirm they have trespassed where they don't belong.

More than just a monster movie, The Ritual is a story about confronting guilt and trauma. The true horror lies as much within the characters as in the creature lurking among the trees. The movie won the Best Visual Effects award at the 20th British Independent Film Awards.
