Premature birth, before 37 weeks, is globally the biggest cause of death among newborns. However, it is possible for babies to survive outside the womb in about 21 to 24 weeks. But the chances of survival for such babies are very slim even with incubators as they are extremely premature. Scientists are hopeful that this will be in the past as they are already experiencing breakthroughs by growing premature fetuses in an artificial womb.
An artificial womb is a device that allows the growing of a fetus outside the body of an organism that would normally carry the fetus to term.
In 2016 scientists published two studies regarding human embryos developing for thirteen days within an ecto-uterine environment.
Fetal researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in 2017 published a study showing they had grown premature lamb fetuses for four weeks in an extra-uterine life support system. The artificial womb provides the perfect environment to grow designer babies or humans without the help of the parents.
