Recognizing that children are individuals with their own lives—before they are students—was a transformative realization for me. In my conversation with Craig Pinkney, we explored how understanding the challenges kids face outside of school can significantly enhance our engagement with them.

This perspective is equally important for adults; everyone carries their own experiences that affect their behavior and interactions. By being aware of these underlying factors, we can foster a more accommodating and empathetic environment, especially for young people who may be facing difficulties even before they enter the classroom.

My own childhood traumas impacted my school experience, yet those challenges ultimately shaped my purpose. Remember, what happens to you may be happening for you.
