The Living Building Challenge / New Zealand's First Living Building

Описание к видео The Living Building Challenge / New Zealand's First Living Building

The Tūhoe or "Children of the Mist" are a Maori tribe, based in New Zealand's North Island. Tūhoe traditional land is Te Urewera (Te Urewera National Park) in the eastern North Island, a steep, heavily forested area which includes Lake Waikaremoana. Tūhoe traditionally relied on the forest for their needs and practiced what today would be considered sustainable practices.

Today Tūhoe continue to run conservation programmes for endangered birds, such as the kiwi and the kokako in Te Urewera. In 2013 Tūhoe embarked on an ambitious plan; to bring their iwi together in the construction of their central headquarters -- "Te Wharehou o Tūhoe" New Zealand's first Living Building. The process of designing, building and operating a Living Building must be considered sustainable across seven performance areas: site, water, energy, health, materials, equity and beauty. The finished building must demand nothing from its surrounding environment, and be self-sufficient in terms of energy, water and waste.

Today the completed Te Wharehou o Tūhoe stands as a landmark of Tūhoe progress, without forgetting the tribe's historical focus on the forest and sustainability. Exterior cladding, decking and FSC® certified interior timber for the project was supplied by Abodo Wood. Visit www.abodo.co.nz
