STORYLINE:
Johnny Depp has selected five charities to donate the $1 Million he received from ex-wife Amber Heard after both sides agreed to a settlement deal last December following their highly-publicized trial in Virginia one year ago.

A source close to Depp tells The AP the actor will donate $200,000 each to Make-A-Film Foundation, The Painted Turtle, Red Feather, Tetiaroa Society, and Amazonia Fund Alliance.

Both sides argued to a jury in Fairfax County Circuit Court in Virginia that the other had defamed them. Depp said he was libeled by Heard when she wrote a 2018 op-ed piece in The Washington Post describing herself as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.” Depp also testified that he was physically and verbally abused by Heard.

A jury ruled in Depp's favor, awarding him $10 million in damages, but also awarded $2 million to Heard. Both sides appealed various aspects of the jury's decision but dropped their cases, agreeing on the $1 million payout from Heard to Depp.

The ruling in the U.S. was a contrast to a judge's decision in the United Kingdom -- ruling against Depp in a libel suit he brought there against a British tabloid. The judge in that 2020 case concluded that Heard had indeed been subject to abuse at Depp’s hands on multiple occasions.
