Struggling to get smooth, cinematic footage with your drone on bright, sunny days? Are your skies blown out and motion looking jittery? You might need ND filters! In this video, I share my personal experiment comparing drone footage shot with NO filter vs. the DJI ND16 filter vs. the DJI ND64 filter. Discover how these small, inexpensive pieces of glass can make a HUGE difference to your aerial videography.

Join me as I take my DJI Flip out on a bright day to specifically test how Neutral Density (ND) filters impact the final video quality. We'll look at three distinct scenarios:

Baseline Flight (No Filter): See the raw footage straight from the drone. We'll analyze the exposure, the highlights, and importantly, the motion characteristics resulting from the high shutter speeds typically needed in bright light without a filter.

ND16 Filter Applied: Witness the transformation! I attached the ND16 filter, which reduces the light hitting the sensor, allowing for slower, more natural shutter speeds (getting closer to the 180-degree rule). See how this creates gorgeous, smoother motion and more balanced daylight shots.

ND64 Filter Applied: Taking it a step further, I tested the darker ND64 filter. This filter cuts even more light, allowing for even slower shutter speeds or shooting in extremely bright conditions. Observe the deeper contrast and slightly moodier, more dramatic look it provides.

Throughout the video, we'll do side-by-side comparisons so you can clearly see the difference in motion blur, dynamic range, and overall cinematic quality. ND filters are essential tools for drone pilots wanting to elevate their videography. They give you manual control over your shutter speed regardless of the lighting conditions, which is key to achieving that professional, pleasing motion blur instead of hyper-sharp, stuttery footage.

I found the ND16 to be a fantastic all-rounder for beautiful daylight shooting, while the ND64 offers a great option for intensely bright days or achieving a specific stylistic look with deeper contrast. Honestly, these filters have become my best friend for shooting when the sun is out – they're compact, don't break the bank, and the improvement in video quality is truly impactful and delightful.
