In Episode 7 of Street You Grew Up On, Lee Daniels reflects on his path to authenticity and the experiences that shaped his life. Raised in Philadelphia, Lee was deeply influenced by his strong, supportive Black mother, who recognized his strengths from an early age. Alongside her, there were many other strong Black women in his life who played a vital role in nurturing his creativity and encouraging him to embrace his artistic spirit, especially when he started in Hollywood. His father, a cop, was a part of his upbringing, but it was these women who inspired and empowered him to pursue his passion for the arts.

Lee’s passion for theater began early, and he recalls deeply appreciating and putting on plays like Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. This early immersion in theater helped him discover his voice and laid the foundation for his future in film.

When Lee landed in Los Angeles, he initially pursued a completely different career, though his true calling to the entertainment industry remained strong. Over time, he found his way back to his passion, eventually achieving much success in Hollywood.

Lee sheds light on The Attic Youth Center, which empowers young people to embrace their authentic selves through creativity and mentorship. His story serves as a reminder that true growth often comes from following your passion, even when the path takes unexpected turns.
