The footage for this video came from an early CGI study conducted by computer scientist Nelson Max as part of the Topology Films Project called Space Filling Curves completed in 1972. The computer animation was carried out at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with support from the National Science Foundation.

Within this video Nelson Max describes the mathematical problem of taking a single line and creating pattern with it that fills up an entire flat surface area. The task is to create the most efficient pattern with this singular line such that the smallest amount of space is left blank. The practical application of this problem is in data compression. If data can be fit into the physically most efficient configuration, more data can be stored in a single drive. Additionally space filling curves are used to create functions for creating computer graphics. Again if we have a two dimensional plane such as a display screen and we need to find the most efficient means of mapping images on to that screen the most efficient function will save processing time and energy. In the original video Nelson demonstrates many different function based patterns that can be used for this task.

My inspiration of combining this footage occurred for a number of reasons. First off the song was titled Rosa and the background color of this video is pink. Second, the song samples Billy Idol's song Eyes Without a Face (1983), and it fit with the visuals of this video due to many of the space filling curves creating eye like shapes on a background which does not resemble a face. Furthermore Billy Idol's song title is a reference to the 1960 French horror film about a doctor who has a daughter whose face becomes disfigured due to a car crash and the doctor's attempts to transplant faces from other people to make his daughter beautiful again. Third and most importantly, I felt that the visuals of the lines forming more and more complex lines and forms on top of a pink back drop parallels the inner machinations of someone's heart as they are falling in love with someone else. Meeting a person who is utterly captivating will invariably cause a love struck heart to start twisting, turning, and curling in upon itself.

The question is obviously begged: why people feel these kinds of feelings? My best guess is that the act of falling in love is far more profound than one simply becoming aware of an evolutionarily optimal mate before them. It is something akin to seeing the future. In these moments it is possible to see a realm of possible potentialities. A vision of a life full of joy, adventure, fun, and most critical of all, someone else who will similarly be able to produce and enjoy such a life with you. However in the exact same moment there will also be doubt and uncertainty: "Is this person really as great as I imagine?". There will be dissonance: "No one can be this amazing, I will look for all their flaws to lessen these feelings.". The moment at once will be life affirming and soul crushing all the same. Essentially the space of their heart will be filled with curves of all the thoughts, feelings, anxieties, beliefs, wisdom that have been excited by the encounter. This video is about that.
