Hello Washington DC! Two new giant pandas are coming back to US from China as fans are thrilled

Two new giant pandas are returning to Washington’s National Zoo from China this year.

The announcement from the Smithsonian Institution on Wednesday comes about half a year after the zoo sent its three pandas back to China.

Other American zoos also have sent pandas back as loan agreements lapsed during heightened diplomatic tensions between the U.S. and China.

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute says the pandas heading to Washington are Bao Li and Qing Bao.

Giant pandas are icons in Washington and beloved around the nation and the world. Pandas have been the symbol of U.S.-China friendship since Beijing gifted a pair to the National Zoo in 1972.
