As the August bank holiday weekend approaches, there's some sunshine and heat on the way across the UK. Weatherman Liam Dutton has the latest on how hot it is going to be and for how long.

Much of August has been distinctly cool and wet for the time of year. Heavy rain has caused flooding and strong winds have led to travel disruption. However, in the coming days, there’ll be a burst of sunshine and heat across the UK.

In recent weeks, the jet stream has been south of the UK bringing low pressure. By the weekend, the jet stream will be north of the UK. This will allow an area of high pressure to build, settling the weather down.

Scotland and N Ireland will see temperatures widely reach 20-25C. England and Wales will widely see 23-28C, with parts of eastern England reaching 30C. Cloud amounts will vary at times, but most places will see plenty of sunshine.

There are signs that England and Wales will see the heat continue for the first half of next week, albeit with a chance of some thundery showers. Scotland and N Ireland are likely to turn cooler, cloudier and unsettled sooner - from Tuesday onwards.

The beginning of September is looking cooler and more changeable, although there’s still uncertainty about the detail.
