Kriya Yoga, as taught by Paramahansa Yogananda, is a profound spiritual practice designed to accelerate spiritual growth and lead to self-realization. It incorporates the science of breath and energy control (pranayama) to quiet the mind and direct the life force inward, thereby aiding in deep meditation and communion with the Divine.

The Essence of Kriya Yoga

Kriya Yoga is a technique that directly works with prana (life energy) through breath control. It helps to accelerate spiritual evolution by harmonizing body, mind, and soul. This technique focuses on the breath and spinal centers (chakras) to facilitate deep meditation and experience of divine consciousness.

Preparation for Kriya Yoga

Inner Calmness: Before starting Kriya practice, practitioners are encouraged to sit in a meditative posture and relax the body.
Concentration: One should practice bringing the awareness to the breath and letting go of thoughts, preparing the mind for the subtle energy movements.

Hong-Sau Technique
The Hong-Sau technique is used to focus the mind and calm restless thoughts. It involves watching the breath and mentally chanting “Hong” with the inhalation and “Sau” with the exhalation. This technique helps still the mind and prepare for deeper Kriya practice.

The Kriya Pranayama Technique

Kriya Yoga pranayama focuses on circulating energy along the spine. By controlling the breath, the practitioner moves prana up and down the spine through the chakras.

The breath is slowed down gradually, and with time, practitioners experience moments where the breath naturally pauses. This pause is called Kevala Kumbhaka, which allows the mind to reach deeper states of meditation.

Meditation on the Divine Light
Once the mind is sufficiently calm, practitioners are advised to focus on the spiritual eye (Ajna chakra) in the middle of the forehead. This is the seat of higher consciousness. By focusing here, one can perceive inner light, leading to deeper spiritual experiences.

Closing with Aum

Yogananda recommended chanting Aum or Om after the Kriya practice. The sound of Aum, considered the primordial sound of the universe, helps harmonize the practitioner’s consciousness with the universal vibration.

Guided Kriya Practice

Paramahansa Yogananda emphasized that Kriya Yoga should be learned under the guidance of an authorized teacher. Practitioners progress gradually by mastering basic techniques like Hong-Sau and Aum meditation before moving to the advanced Kriya pranayama techniques.
