This Astronaut Was Also A 'MiG Mad Marine' In The Korean War!

All Mercury astronauts came from the fighter pilot community. But one of them had a career that really stands out. It was the only Marine among them, John Glenn. After flying Corsairs in WWII, he continued his military career which led him to two combat tours in the Korean War. In the first one, he flew F9F Panther. His tendency to attract AAA fire earned him the nickname 'Ol' Magnet Tail'. After his first combat tour, he was approved an USAF exchange tour and he came back to Korea to fly F-86 Sabre. But the war was coming to an end and Glenn was worried he would miss his chance to fight the MiGs. As a result of this, his squadron mates painted the name 'MiG Mad Marine' on his Sabre. High intensity of the final days of the Korean War finally gave Glenn his chance.

Glenn's participation in the Mercury program is portrayed in the famous movie The Right Stuff. If by some chance you haven't seen it, go ahead. If DCS World someday gets the Panther or Corsair, we might cover some more of his exceptional career.
