The year is 1836. Our main character, Hanne, is 14 years old. She has a twin brother called Matthias. They live in the village of Kay. A small village in Prussia. Prussia doesn't exist anymore. It was an independent German state in the north east of Europe. It is now part of Poland. They live there with their mother and father. Hanne doesn't have any friends. Until, one day, a new family move to Kay. They have a daughter of a similar age to Hanne called Thea. They strike up a friendship immediately.
