Health system managers, planners, and researchers require accurate and timely information on the health needs and health service utilization patterns of the populations they serve. Such data can aid in monitoring program implementation, evaluating the effectiveness of programs, and allocating resources across programs. Routine health information systems (RHIS), or administrative data systems, have become widely available in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and are an emerging source of data that can be used for big-data analytics and evaluations. For example, the District Health Information Software, version 2 (DHIS2), a web-based open-source RHIS platform, is now used in 67 countries, including many in Africa and Asia. Despite this prolific growth in data collection and the increasing interest from health systems researchers to use RHIS data, they remain relatively underutilized for health systems research. This panel session will focus on overcoming two major obstacles to using this data for high-quality research studies: the first section will focus on the use of RHIS data for health research, and the second section will focus on country experiences in strengthening the quality and use of RHIS data.
