(2 Dec 2021) Health care workers in Kosovo's capital on Thursday held an eight-hour strike over salaries and unpaid wages.
The health trade union said in a statement the government had not met with them to discuss legislation on pay rises to start next year.
"Due to the lack of answer from the government, the Federation of Health Trade Unions of Kosovo (FSSHK) is obliged to hold an 8-hour strike at the health institutions," said the statement.
Doctors in Kosovo are paid between 250 to 600 euros (283-679 US dollars) a month.
The country's average salary is 466 euros ($528).
Dion Musliu, a doctor protesting in Pristina, said many had volunteered for unpaid work during peak of the coronavirus pandemic, but that now some shifts were still not being paid.
"We are protesting to get our night shifts paid and as well the self-financed residents (doctors) to get on regular contracts with regular salary," he said.
Daily cases have been falling in the last month, with just eight new cases on Tuesday.
More than 42% of the population have received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccines.
