Astronomy on Tap is a global phenomenon where professional scientists give informal science talks in local bars with accompanying pub trivia and interactions with the public. The Los Angeles chapter of Astronomy on Tap is very active, with monthly events at the Dog Haus Biergarten in Pasadena. This recording is a bit noisy due to the logistics of operating a camera in a crowded bar, but it sufficiently captures the enthusiastic energy of the few hundred attendees each month. Dr. Rohan Naidu is a NASA Hubble Fellow at MIT working on studies of galaxy evolution. His research addresses when the first galaxies emerged to illuminate the universe, how they ionized the intergalactic reservoirs of hydrogen, and how they synthesized the elements that would one day seed life on Earth. Rohan pursues these galaxies with a near-and-far approach. As one of the first users of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, he is leading direct studies of galaxies at the highest redshifts. And through archaeological studies of our own galaxy, aided by ESA’s Gaia satellite, he has excavated some of the most ancient systems that lie buried within the Milky Way. https://rohannaidu.github.io/
