Описание к видео The U.S. Constitution sold for $43.2 million

This artifact is available for private purchase and loan to public institutions such as museums.

At a Sotheby's auction in 2021, a six-page First Copy of the United States Constitution, printed by Dunlap & Claypoole on September 19, 1787, sold for $43.2 million to billionaire Ken Griffin. Approximately 500 copies were printed, but only 13 are known to exist.

The reason constitutions printed in the late 18th century are so valuable at auction is because mass printing was not possible with the technology of the time, and most were lost to war and natural disasters.

This constitution was produced by Hudson and Goodwin in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1796. It is likely that the actual printing date was 1788, about four months after the First Copy of the Constitution. It could have been printed for legal documents or books at the time, or it could have been produced for use by the Connecticut Legislature when ratifying the U.S. Constitution.

1788 On January 9, the Connecticut Legislature ratified the U.S. Constitution. While copies of the Constitution must have been distributed to legislators at the time, they no longer exist, making it unclear what they were used for.
However, given that Hudson and Goodwin was a major printing and publishing firm in Hartford, Connecticut, and made significant contributions to the distribution of early American legal documents, it is highly likely that they printed this Constitution for the Connecticut Legislature's ratification of the U.S. Constitution on January 9, 1788.

This 18th-century work of printed art is a proud American historical artifact that should be passed down to future generations.
