In 2022, Pakistan was hit by one of the worst floods in its history. Millions of people were affected, and thousands lost their homes and loved ones.
Among those affected were the thousands of families who rely on their animals for their livelihoods.

Brooke Pakistan is an animal welfare organization that focuses on improving the lives of working horses, donkeys, and mules in the country.
But when the flood hit; they knew they had to do more. They quickly mobilized to provide emergency aid to both animals and their owners.
Brooke Pakistan recognized that for these communities to recover, their animals also needed to be taken care of.

Brooke set up mobile clinics to provide medical treatment to injured and sick animals. They also provided food and supplies to help keep the animals healthy during the disaster.

Brooke Pakistan didn't stop there. They also planned for the Rehabilitation phase which is to rebuild the animal shelters, water troughs, food mangers that were destroyed by the floods, and also to train animal owners in disaster preparedness and resilience, to help them rebuild their livelihoods and ensure the long-term welfare of their animals.

During the rehabilitation phase, 88 animal sheds & shelters were constructed through community and Brick kiln owners' participation.

196 portable and 4 permanent water troughs were provided to ensure water availability.
60 water hand pumps were installed to make sure water is available for both animals and humans.
86 feeding troughs & mangers were built for clean feeding to equids.
131 first aid kits placed inside the shelters to ensure immediate relief for injured and sick animals.
51 community change agents trained to strengthen the first layer of the referral system, and to promote service-seeking behavior, amongst the equine-owing communities.
86 animal health providers were linked with communities for quality services.

The floods may have been a disaster, but thanks to the support of our donors and efforts of dedicated teams in the field, Brooke Pakistan was able to make a significant impact on the lives of these animal-owing communities and helped them on their road to recovery.
