On the night of July 20, 1971, at 1:30 a.m., twenty-year-old Beverly Lanphear returned to her new apartment after a night out with friends. She had just enjoyed a late-night party in the friendly community of Burlington, Vermont. When she arrived, she immediately noticed that the door to her room was slightly open.

Beverly entered the bedroom and was horrified to find her roommate Rita unconscious on the floor, her face covered in bruises. She quickly called her two other roommates, who were home but unaware of any trouble there. Beverly then promptly contacted the police to report the situation.

police Richard Goro quickly arrived at the address provided along with paramedics. However, by the time they arrived, Rita had already passed away. The apartment was now considered a crime scene. While waiting for backup, police Richard worked to separate the room from the roommates and secure the crime scene. The roommates were also present, including Beverly, a married couple, Carrie Duane, nineteen, and her partner Paul Robinson, twenty, who had recently moved in with her. The police then arrived to begin a formal investigation.
