Ask an Expert - How to paint and stain roughsawn timber

In this MasterStroke Ask an Expert video, Resene’s Jay Sharples shares his advice on how to paint or stain rough sawn timber, whether it's a pergola, fence or retaining wall.

Step 1
First you need to decide whether you’re going to paint or stain – this is down to personal preference or dependent on what is already on the surface. Resene has a wide variety of paints and stains available, so head to your local Resene ColorShop to get expert advice on which paint or stain would work best for you. If you are intending to stain your timber surface, bear in mind that it requires more regular maintenance. Jay suggests restaining every 18-24 months so your timber surface stays well protected and looking as good as possible.

Step 2
Get things started by treating for moss and mould with Resene Moss and Mould Killer. Remember to stick to the mixing ratios on the back of the packaging.

Step 3
Clean the timber surface with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, following the product instructions.

Step 4
Now it is time to get started with applying your paint or stain. You'll be using a brush for this, and Resene has a range of varying sizes – but remember the bigger brush, the heavier it will get as the day goes on.

Step 5
Whether painting or staining, you'll need to apply 2 coats. If you've decided to stain your timber surface, remember that it will require regular maintenance and you’ll need to re-stain every 18-24 months.
