Villagers in eastern Afghanistan are digging through rubble with bare hands and shovels in a desperate search for survivors following a powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake on September 1, 2025, that killed at least 800 people and wounded 2,800. Remote mountainous areas, particularly in Kunar province where the quake was centered, are difficult to reach, and many villages have been destroyed, leaving survivors to search for loved ones and bury the dead with little to no modern equipment or trained rescue teams.
