Marburg is an ancient city in Central Germany in the federal state of Hesse. It is best known for the old university, founded as early as 1527, and the medieval castle on the hill. Marburg is a magnificent historic city, a labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets lined with old Gothic churches and perfectly preserved examples of architecture from the Middle Ages.
Marburg city is not that impossibly old: coins began to be minted here around the 12th century, and the impetus for its present development was the move here in 1228 by the dowager princess of Thuringia, Elisabeth of Hungary. Elisabeth von Thuringen devoted her life to nursing. When she passed away, at the age of 24, she was canonised as one of the most revered saints in the region and patroness of Marburg. The city became Hessian capital under Elisabeth's daughter, Sophia of Brabant.

Marburg sights St Elisabeth Church (Elisabethkirche). It is the earliest purely Gothic church building on German soil. It was built by the Teutonic Order in honour of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia, whose tomb was in the church. Behind the High Altar you can see beautiful Gothic stained glass windows.
