About this series of IELTS speaking videos:

These videos feature me reading questions to you. Pause the video, practice answering the question, then resume the video to continue to the next question. My videos are to help you prepare for a real exam by putting you personally in an anxious and challenging situation, just like the real exam. No answers are given in these videos as you lose marks if you memorise standard answers. It's up to you to create your own answers. If you don't practice for a real world situation, you're more likely to not get the band score that you need.

Practice makes perfect. There are now over 90 videos available for you to practice with. Start with video 1 and work your way through. I'd recommend practicing at least 20 videos before attempting the real exam for the first time. Then, if you fail that one, do 20 more.

For the best effect, don't watch or listen to the video until you're ready to answer the questions. You must be surprised by the questions so that you can have some feeling as to what the real test would be like.

Also, in the real exam, your answers should be as long as possible. Aim to talk for at least a minute, even if you think the examiner will interrupt you after 20 seconds. Get into the habit of making loooooooooong answers!

To help everyone, why not try and answer one of the questions in the comments? Use a comment box for each question. You could also reply to other comments with your own suggestions on how to answer the question chosen.

IELTS speaking tests are conducted in slightly different ways around the world. The real test is officially about 11-14 minutes. Unofficially, if your level is high (native), you may only be there for 10. Sometimes, the examiner may let things go a bit longer, especially if you ask questions about some of the questions. I've had one student have their exam interrupted by a fire alarm, while another's was sped up because the previous examinee had delayed things and the examiner wanted to leave on time. With over 800 testing centers in the world and thousands of examiners, anything can happen!

Also, don't expect a native English speaker. Even in English speaking countries many native English speakers don't want to do the job. (It doesn't pay that much! Actually it pays well per exam, but you usually only get weekend work, not enough to live by.) So, you're more likely to get someone who has advanced level English but doesn't speak it as a native. Don't let that put you off. All examiners have been highly trained, and there are standards in place so that anyone with great English can be an examiner. (In Australia, many of my students have said that their examiner has been from India.)

In the real test the examiner will probably do things like test his/her recorder to record you, hand you other materials, ask you questions more specific to you etc so please see these Youtube videos as another tool you can use to practice for your speaking test.

I hope you enjoy the videos. - Jason
