Jesus headed towards Jerusalem
and when he came near to the Mount of Olives,
he sent two disciples to get a colt,
telling them to say, if anyone asked, “The Lord needs it.”
They brought the colt to Jesus,
placed their cloaks on it for him to ride,
and as he rode along, the crowd praised God with joy,
But when some Pharisees urged him to silence them,
he answered, “If they were silent, the stones would shout out.”

Palm Sunday
So many sermons written
We could talk about Jesus
or the palm branches
or the donkey
or the Mount of Olives
or Jerusalem
We could describe the crowds cheering
The disciples praising
The Pharisees protesting
Well, some of them
Or we could talk about the stones
Crying out
Stones
Loudly proclaiming the greatness of God
Even when everything is silent
The stones will still find a voice
They will burst into song
And bear witness to the Divine
God’s Grace is unstoppable
God’s Truth is unshakeable
When justice is suppressed
When compassion is withheld
God will find a way
And draw us, yes us, out of complacency
To reach out to the broken
To speak up for the vulnerable
To name injustice
To stay beside those who are hurting
To give voice to the heart of God
But even when we falter or fail
the stones will join the heavenly chorus
and creation will sing God’s praise
