In 1843, Cherokee Principal Chief John Ross called a meeting of the Indian Nations that had been forcibly relocated to Indian Territory. It was the largest gathering of its kind, but first-hand documentation of the historic event was rare. In this Cherokee Almanac, we bring to light the first-hand account of a missionary who's writing directly corresponds to a well-known painting of the event, as described here by Gilcrease Museum Curator of Art Laura Fry.
