"I've just heard the terrible, shocking news of the death of the Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. I wanted first, on behalf of the British government, to express our condolences to her husband, to her children, to her wider family and friends and to the people of Sweden. This is an appalling event. But I also wanted to say something more personal because Anna was a good friend of mine. I was with her for two days at a meeting of European Foreign Ministers on Friday and Saturday of last weekend. She was someone who was full of life, represented everything that is wonderful about Sweden and about Europe. She had this extraordinary ability to balance the demand of one of the most active of Europe's Foreign Minister's, with her role as one of the leading Swedish politicians and that of being somebody completely committed to her family."

STORYLINE:

Britain's Foreign Secretary has offered his condolences to the family of the Anna Lindh, the Swedish Foreign Minister who died after a stabbing attack in Stockholm.

He described her death as terrible and shocking and spoke of his personal memories of her during his time as Foreign Minister.

Lindh was stabbed repeatedly while shopping in an exclusive department store.

She died just before 5:30 a.m. (0330 GMT), after more than 10 hours of surgery, Prime Minister Goeran
Persson said.

Lindh, who was No. 3 in the government and a leading supporter of the European Union's single currency, was
often touted as a possible successor to Persson.

The attack also cast a pall over Sweden's upcoming referendum to decide whether to adopt the euro as its
currency.

Campaigning on the issue was postponed for at least a day and it wasn't known if Sunday's referendum vote
would be delayed.

Lindh, 46, was head of the Foreign Ministry since 1998, serving as environmental minister before that. She was a member of the Riksdag, or parliament, from 1982-1985. She was married with two children.
