The entire final quarter of the 1984 Victorian Football League (VFL) Grand Final, which was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday 29th September, 1984, between the Hawthorn Football Club (The Hawks) and the Essendon Football Club (The Bombers). The 88th VFL Grand Final saw an official attendance of 92,685 spectators. The commentators for this Grand Final were Peter Landy, Lou Richards, Bob Skilton, and Stephen Phillips. The legendary Allan Jeans was Hawthorn's coach, and the legendary Kevin Sheedy was Essendon's coach.

The final score saw Essendon defeat Hawthorn by 24 points, handing Essendon its 13th Premiership.

Recorded on VHS from the broadcast of the 2001 AFL Grand Final Marathon, September 29, 2001, on the Seven Network (HSV-7).

Vaxfacts: The 1984 Grand Final was a rematch of the 1983 Grand Final, with Hawthorn having defeated Essendon by 83 points.

From 1967-1983 (17 seasons), only four teams had won Premierships between them- Hawthorn, Richmond, Carlton and North Melbourne. Essendon's victory ended this streak.

The attendance of 92,685 was one of the lowest attendances at the MCG for that time- with over 100,000 seat capacity, cold weather and a hailstorm the previous night discouraged many from attending.
