Why do we spell some adjectives with -ый, while others end in -ий? Why do we write большое, but хорошее? Why русский, but русская?

Just as with nouns, the way we spell Russian adjective endings depends on whether the stem ends in a hard or a soft consonant. It's a simple concept, but we'll also go over a few seeming exceptions that can be confusing at first.
