Apple is planning to source all US iPhones from India, as early as next year. Currently, most of it is made in China.

But I was curious about how much value addition happens in India? Are we just assembling these iPhones in India by importing all the readymade parts from outside, or is there some serious value addition like building a few specific parts?

So, I dug a little deeper and found some very interesting things.

Apple started assembling iPhones in India in 2017, and at that time our value addition was just 2%, basically it was only assembly labor, packaging and some logistics.

This value addition has now increased to 15-20%, as the company started sourcing more valuable products locally, like batteries, cables and enclosures.

And the government wants to increase this to 40%, by building more complex products like processors, display panels, and camera modules, currently, we import them from countries like China and Japan.

Also by the end of 2026, a quarter of all iPhones sold in the world will be made in India, and it will be worth more than $50 billion.

A 50 billion dollar worth of industry that was practically zero, just 10 years ago.

This, in my opinion, is the biggest success story out of the government’s PLI scheme.
