How to Quickly Revive a Rusty Beater Gun

Описание к видео How to Quickly Revive a Rusty Beater Gun

I picked up a $50 beater gun at an auction that had clearly been left in a basement or in a truck and had some rust issues and some nasty shit on the stock that made it look terrible. Rather than clean the gun up I decided to make a video of how I clean up abused guns when I get them.

The trick when buying or selling a gun is to try to guess what shape it will be in after cleaning. When selling you want to get the gun as good looking as possible to get the most out of it. When buying you can hope the seller was lazy and sold the gun in a condition like this one that you can easily take care of with 20 minutes and a bit of elbow grease.

The main issues with this Remington 581 is that it's got plenty of surface rust which we need to remove with oil and abrasion. And the stock has some white scaly substance on it which feels and looks nasty so we need to buff it off and see how the finish underneath looks.

The gun also needs a few spare parts but now that we know how it looks under the rust and grime I feel it will be worth tracking them down.

You can use the same basic process to cleanup old heirloom guns that you get from family or beaters like this one that you might find at a pawn shop or auction.

I would avoid using this process on anything truly old or expensive like WWII or older military guns or pre 1900 Colt or Winchester revolvers/rifles as collector value is often tied to having the original patina on older guns.
